Hospice vs. Palliative Care: Understanding the Difference

January 10, 2026  |  Spero Hospice Team

Hospice care and palliative care are related but distinct approaches to caring for people with serious illnesses. Understanding the differences between them can help families make informed decisions about the best path forward for their loved ones.

Palliative care is specialized medical care focused on relieving the symptoms, pain, and stress of a serious illness. The key characteristic of palliative care is that it can be provided at any stage of illness, alongside curative or life-prolonging treatments. A patient receiving chemotherapy, for example, can also receive palliative care to manage side effects and improve quality of life.

Hospice care, on the other hand, is a specific form of palliative care designed for patients who have decided to stop pursuing curative treatments. Hospice is appropriate when a physician certifies that a patient has a terminal illness with a life expectancy of six months or less. The focus shifts entirely to comfort, symptom management, and quality of life.

Both approaches share a commitment to whole-person care, addressing not just physical symptoms, but emotional, social, and spiritual needs as well. Both involve interdisciplinary teams of doctors, nurses, social workers, and counselors. And both prioritize the wishes and dignity of the patient.

The practical differences come down to timing and treatment goals. Palliative care begins at diagnosis and can continue alongside any treatment plan. Hospice care begins when the focus shifts from cure to comfort. Both can dramatically improve quality of life for patients and their families.

At Spero Hospice & Palliative Care, we provide both hospice and palliative care services to families across New Jersey. If you’re unsure which type of care is right for your loved one, our team is here to help you understand your options and make the best decision for your family.
